Nous ne serons pas difficiles

montrez-nous-les
déchoir et
renaître de leurs cendres
vendez-nous-les
journaux avec leurs faces
dans chaque salon
donnez-nous
des chefs tribaux
des empereurs de l’année

dans notre pays
où les meneurs
sont tués dans l’œuf
par le nihilisme
nous ne serons pas difficiles
nous prendrons
les rois que vous nous donnerez

We will not be difficult

Give us
the fallen and
the born again
circulate
the dailies whose front pages
clutter every parlour
give us totemic chiefs
fashionable potentates

our homegrown
representatives
are wasted in the ovum
by nihilism
we shall not be defiant
we shall suffer
the kings you provide

Grande Noirceur

et si nous vivons écrasés dans le Grande noirceur
prise deux
prise vingt-huit mille
prise immémoriale
le gouvernement ne vas pas
ne vas pas

j’imagine
que le jour et la nuit se partagent le ciel
l’un après l’autre
dans un cycle millénaire

mais dans tout votre confortable cynicisme
laissez-moi espérer que l’aube arrive bientôt
laissez-moi au moins faire ça
sans me dire
voyons
innocente
lève la tête
le soleil est au zénith

alors qu’il fait noir comme dans le cul d’un ours

The Great Darkness

And so our lives are trampled by the Great
darkness
take two
take twenty-eight hundred—
a perpetual take;
the government gets nothing done
nothing done

I imagine
that day and night divvy the sky
one at the heels of the other
on and on

But for all of your cozy cynicism
allow me my longings for daybreak
at the very least
without jeering
without saying
come on now,
bozo
keep your head up
the sun’s clearly cresting

cuz it’s darker than a bear’s
ass
